My first post on my new blog! I’m just going to jump straight into it…
Last week I had the pleasure of making a fun and interesting (to say the least) Coolrunnings themed Bob Sleigh cake for a little boy’s 6th birthday.
His mom, Liz, had organised a tobogganing party at the Mendip Ski Slope for Henry and thirty of his friends. I popped over the evening before the party to give them the cake and their reaction was a real boost for my spirits. I had struggled so much with the cake as I’m definitely a pink and pretty kind of cake designer and I always find masculine cake themes so uninspiring. Plus this cake was on the extra large size and a really weird shape to create. I wasn’t even sure he was going to register it was a bobsleigh, but I needn’t have been so worried, because as soon as he lifted the box he shouted out ‘This is the coolest cake! A bobsleigh from my favourite movie!’.
Liz was kind enough to get in touch to say ‘Thank you for making Henry’s day.’ And the photo she attached made my weekend. Oh, the joy cakes can bring!
Here are some pics of how I made the cake.
I started out with a 9 inch tall cake, leveled, filled and trimmed. I then cut the cake in half and laid the two pieces one in front of the other and used ganache to stick them together. I then carved the cake into something that vaguely resembled a bobsleigh.
